Joyce was born August 19, 1929 in Mitchell, NE to Max and Emily Gorr Hardin. She has been a lifelong resident of the area. She received her education at Haig School and graduated in 1948 from Scottsbluff High School. She married Donald Lackey on August 22, 1948 and together they had four children; Randy, Dione, Robin and Gay. They made their home and farmed in the valley. After Don passed away, she married Robert Piffner on Sept 3, 1974 in Hot Springs, SD.

Joyce was raised on the farm where she worked very hard, and she did so all of her life. She worked until she was 80 years old. She worked as a cook for Haig School, the Vet’s Home, and Woolworth’s. She also had various other duties working for Ward’s, Jirdon Bean, K-Mart, and Brown Sheep Company. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, and gambling at Deadwood and Black Hawk. She loved watching the Broncos and the Huskers play. She especially loved cooking for her family and on the holidays.
