Jeanne Camille Westervelt, 82, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Heritage Estates in Gering. Her memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Craig Collins officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. At the family’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorials in Jeanne’s honor may be made in care of the church, Regional West Hospice, Heritage of Gering, or FAD-Friends of Alzheimers and Dementia. Jeanne was born September 28, 1935 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, at the Methodist Hospital. She was the fourth daughter born to Jack and Camille Elliott. In her younger years, Jeanne learned to play the piano and the marimba, often performing with her older sisters. She attended Scottsbluff High School where she was a cheerleader and graduated as valedictorian of her class. In her junior year, she caught the eye of a shy classmate, Ted Westervelt.
She attended the University of Nebraska where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Mortar Board, a national honor society of college seniors. She was united in marriage to Ted Westervelt on June 16, 1957, at the United Methodist church of Scottsbluff. From this union two daughters were born: Cindy and Cathy. They resided in Scottsbluff where, Jeanne taught high school English and Special Education. After the birth of her children, she continued to substitute teach and judge speech & debate meets. She especially enjoyed working on the high school musicals each spring. She was active in P.E.O., Cooperative Ministries, the soup kitchen, United Methodist Women’s circle and numerous bridge clubs. She was an active volunteer for several non-profit organizations. She visited Texas often to visit her girls and enjoy her 6 grandchildren.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Ted; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jim Massey; daughters Cindy DeSive and Cathy (Dave) Beathard; grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Jack, Audrey, Ben, and Mackenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Camille; sisters Betty Metcalf and Katy Yaley; brothers-in-law Albert Metcalf and Roy Yaley; and niece Nancy Yaley.
